One of the few destinations that have stayed (and I mean stayed) at the top travel list is Barcelona. It’s one of those places that so many of my friends have been to, yet I never made it.

I’d like to think that part of the reason is simply because the time and distance to travel to, from London, is smack-bang in the middle average: as in it’s not a weekender destination/train ride like Paris, nor is it a week-long excursion of, say, Morocco or Eastern Europe.

The food though, was naturally the main incentive. Prior to this trip, Spanish food meant Barrafina pan con tomate (where the portion tends to be 1 slice of rustic bread: 2 tomatoes) and overpriced beachside seafood paella at Sant Antoni de Portmany. Upon reflection, I can tell you genuine pan con tomate has a ratio much more similar to a tomato topping con jam spread. Half a salad tomato, at a push. The paella? Had the best I ever had on my first night through Deliveroo after being pre-occupied by the endless churros cafés dotted around the Gothic Quarter.

If you’re a visual learner, you’d probably appreciate Barcelona more than the average bunch. The colourful mosaics of Palau de la Musica Catalana, the curved roofs of Casa Milà, the legend of the Batlló family and the Tapestry of the Fundació by Miró.

But once you return from the trip, speaking of Gaudí and Miró with eyebrows raised and shoulders shrugged does make you all the more cultural.

Word of advice? Book your tickets online to all attractions. I’ve witnessed the worst queues for La Sagrada Familia and it sits on top of my list, when I return.

2019: 14/6 Today marks five years of @theboldconcept and I've been so busy I nearly forgot 😅 beyond excited to continue this journey and marking this day at the stunning @palaumusicacat . Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the building is situated within the Exiample and neighbours the modernist buildings of Antoni Gaudí. The multicoloured tiles is one of the many examples of how Barcelona used colours so well. Can't wait to be posting more of my travels and thank you all for being part of this journey with me.

2019: 22/6 The mess of it all, especially when you cram all the places you want to visit on the last day. Tip is to buy your tickets in advance for all Barcelona attractions! But equally take in the sights and make the most out of everything 😎

2019: 20/6 And the magnificent mosaic talk continues... the truly fascinating fairytale like roofs of the porter's lodge (one of which is a gift shop, and the other is the little blue house Casa del Guarda, see photo 2). The snake-shaped terrace has one of the best views of the city (photo 1); and underneath the balcony terrace is the hypostyle room which supports the balcony terrace with 86 columns, originally built to be a market for residents.

2019: 20/6 Another Gaudí morning. Finally witnessed the archways of the magnificent Park Güell. There's something about the twists and bends of this park that makes it so unique. The colourful mosaic that paved the roofs and terrace are known as "trencadís", the traditional Catalan clay tiles.

2019: 21/6 Sun seeker? Culture believer. La Sagrada Família was possibly the most underrated landmark, one which I certainly had no knowledge of growing up. The complexity of its shapes, curves, fonts is simply incomparable. Didn't manage to visit the interiors but definitely something marked for my next visit. At first sight, it looks more like a theme park attraction than a church.

2019: 16/6 [BATCH 1] The idiosyncratic works of Joan Míro @fundaciomiro which are works of loose lines that speak together through vibrant colours and collages of everyday objects. The museum offers a complete guide from his inspirations to anti-painting, a period where Míro tortured the canvas by wounding and burning it, as a symbol of freedom. His sculpture and ceramics were closely bound to landscapes, and those exact works that are dotted outdoors around the museum show its interaction with nature.

2019: 17/6 [BATCH 2] when art becomes larger than life. It's hard to choose favourites since it's always considered slightly amateur though I absolutely loved the Tapestry of the Fundació (first picture) which was Míro's interpretation of fresco. Catalan peasant in the moonlight (second picture) which was distinctly remembered for the artist's use of black. Seated woman and child (third picture) which is the first sculpture guests would set their eyes upon entering the museum. And Personnage (pictured last) which was one of Míro's late artworks that marked his versatility in mastering art in more than one form.
