Mackintosh x Mr. Slowboy x Mr. Start
Earlier last week, I attended an event to celebrate the launch of Mackintosh and Mr. Slowboy’s exclusive collaboration with Mr. Start. The collection includes a classic Mackintosh Dunkeld trench and the Travel Suit. For this exclusive collection, the single breasted coat comes in both navy and fawn.
Mr. Start has made Shoreditch its home for more than a decade. The store is situated at one of my favourite crossroads in the area, neighbouring that Damien Hirst installation and my favourite chicken burger shop.
Even upon entering the store, I shrugged my shoulders with a smirk to describe how fitting it was to wear this Mac on that day. Mackintosh has been a pioneer since the 19th century - from inventing the waterproofing cotton to using Loro Piana Storm System wool in its latest designs. Plus, the brand can name Jil Sander, 1017 Alyx 9sm and Porter as recent collaborators.
The secret to Mackintosh’s signature rubberised coats is the bonded cotton fabric - a core material where two layers of cotton are bonded together with rubber to make a material that is light and wind-resistant. Each coat is also waterproof because of an intricate gluing technique which has maintained since the early 19th century. Each seam is glued and a water-resistant tape is attached to ensure there is no water intrusion. You can watch the mesmerising, hand-making process on the website (where you’d probably lose yourself in the ASMR and not realise that the video automatically loops itself).
